MLB Best Bet: Los Angeles Dodgers vs Cincinnati Reds over 9.5 (-115)
Wednesday’s game between the Dodgers and Reds turned into a high-scoring affair after just a few innings. An astonishing 12 runs were scored in the first three innings, followed by a scoring drought until the dramatic walk-off win by the Reds in the ninth inning. This tells me a couple of things: Firstly, both of these teams possess potent offenses that can capitalize on the hitter-friendly conditions at Great American Ball Park. Secondly, both teams had to rely on their bullpens earlier than anticipated due to their starters struggling. The Dodgers’ Noah Syndergaard only lasted three innings, forcing the Los Angeles bullpen to pitch for a significant portion of the game. Consequently, they will have several arms unavailable for this afternoon’s matchup. On the other side, the Reds’ Brandon Williamson managed to pitch 5.2 innings before being replaced, utilizing fewer relievers but employing key arms in high-leverage situations. This suggests that even after the starting pitchers exit the game, there will be opportunities for both teams to score against the latter half of the opposing bullpen.
In the series finale, Clayton Kershaw will take the mound for the Dodgers, facing off against Graham Ashcraft. While this would have been an excellent pitching matchup in April, Ashcraft’s recent performances have been far from impressive. After initially showing promise with a 2.10 ERA, he struggled in May, posting a 9.21 ERA and allowing 7 runs or more in three out of six starts. In his first outing in June, he was hammered by the Rockies, surrendering 10 runs on 9 hits with 4 walks. His ERA at home stands at a discouraging 8.49, and opponents are hitting .300 against him. Considering the Dodgers’ strong performance against right-handed pitching since May 1, ranking third in wRC+, I believe they have a good chance of capitalizing on Ashcraft’s struggles. Furthermore, the Reds have performed exceptionally well against left-handed pitching, boasting a 123 wRC+ since the beginning of May. With the winds favoring hitters once again, I’m leaning towards the over 9.5 runs in Cincinnati.
Best Bet in Sports of the Day
MLB: Chicago Cubs ML (+110) over Los Angeles Angels 9:38 pm ET
The series opener at Angels Stadium presents a lefty showdown between Drew Smyly and Reid Detmers. Comparing the two left-handed pitchers, Smyly has the edge in terms of performance. However, despite this advantage, the Cubs are listed as underdogs. Surprisingly, the offensive capabilities of the Cubs and Angels against left-handed pitching are quite similar, with the Cubs ranking 11th and the Angels 16th in wRC+ since May 1. The difference is marginal, a mere 8 wRC+ points. Since the offensive matchup is evenly matched, we need to examine the pitching matchup to identify the advantage. Drew Smyly comes into focus here.
